The first PLC was created by Bedford Associates (named as 084) in 1968, when they took up the challenge from GM Hydramatic for replacement of electronic equipments for a hard wired relay systems based on paper written by Edward Clarke. Certain developments took place around the years when Mitsubishi launched Q series in launched in 2002.
The origin of SCADA can be traced back to 1940s, when supervisory control first evolved into electric utility systems. Gradual developments took place when General Electric and Control Corporation developed their own supervisory control programs which became popular during 1950s and 1960s.

SCADA Architectures have evolved through 4 generations/stages:
Monolithic : First Generation
Distributed : Second Generation
Networked : Third Generation
Internet of Things : Fourth Generation
